When I recently asked a client what he wanted for his video agency, his answer was to make lots of money! Well yes sure, but how? Doing what? For who? And why?
If you don’t have a clear view of what you want your future business to look like, then each day you are making decisions without knowing if they will take you in the direction you want to go. It’s not strategic and it makes good decision making hard.
Using an analogy of going on a journey here – if you don’t know where you want to get to, how do you know which way to go?
Knowing your dream for your agency is key to everything. It’s not that you won’t have any successes if you don’t have a clear vision laid out, but your journey will be more direct and more rewarding if you do.
What do you want your agency to be known for?
What is your big dream for your agency that you are a little bit too scared to vocalise? This is the time for you to be inspirational. This is where you get to be really bold and unedited and unapologetic.
I’m not just talking about how much profit you want to make or how many employees you aspire to have. This is about drawing the big picture of why your agency exists in the first place.
The problem is that often owners haven’t thought far beyond the fact that they want to work for themselves and the service that they will be delivering and perhaps how much turnover they want their business to make in the next year or two.
Your vision, or your purpose, tells the world, and more importantly yourself, what you want your agency to be known for. It gives you direction and will guide all the decisions you make for your agency.
The most successful agencies we work with are those who are clear on what they do and who they do it for. The ones that struggle are those trying to be everything to everyone.
Here are 5 questions to ask yourself when working out your vision:
1. What are your dreams for your company?
2. What problems are you trying to solve?
And more specifically:
3. Who do we serve?
4. How do we serve them?
5. What do we do for them?
If you can clearly answer these questions you’ll have probably just defined your purpose!
